Reminds me strongly of YOLO https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YOLO_(aphorism) - and some of the linked articles there. As I was reading this I thought either acronym, both of which are from the same "generation" could have easily been interchanged in here! There is a type of risk-taking, sensation-seeking common to both world views.
Thank you Annette! I see them both as rooted in a voyeuristic narcissism - life is lived for individual benefit and must be displayed for others. YOLO reinforces the immediacy of self-pleasure and inability to delay gratification. Sensation-seeking and risk-taking are valued because they enhance the extremity of current experience, without regard for consequences. FOMO demonstrates a lack of reflection in determining personal values and an associated lack of attentional control. One who is not grounded themselves must seek information from others about what to do and what to value. Understanding that you do only live once does not necessitate lack of care about the consequences of current choices and understanding that our time is limited does not necessitate dwelling on the negatives of what we will not be able to do.
